A strategic leader is someone who can visualize, plan, and lead their team to success. They can integrate their strategic plan into their management style to motivate and encourage others to work toward a common goal.

Strategic leaders are not necessarily born. It can take a considerable amount of effort to become a strategic leader. To do so, it is necessary to practice and develop several skills that focus on approaching problems from a strategic standpoint.

Communication

Strategic leaders are exceptional at communicating their vision and strategy to people at all levels, from entry-level employees to the executive team and investors. This includes verbal and written communication. In addition to speaking and writing well, strategic leaders can listen to others and turn that information into an action plan.

Strategic thinking and planning

Strategic leaders need to think about strategy by always anticipating what is coming next. That way, strategic leaders will always be ahead of their competitors.

Once they have a strategy in place, strategic leaders can create a plan by working backward to develop a strategy that will get the desired results. Strategic leaders can create systems that optimize their resources, time, and budget to efficiently reach their goals.

Self-awareness

Strategic leaders know how their behaviors, words, and actions impact those around them. They conduct themselves in a way that motivates and inspires others, even if they do not internally feel confident or comfortable.

Execution

It’s not enough to simply have innovative ideas. Strategic leaders can execute those ideas in ways that benefit their organization. Instead of giving up, they figure out a new path when they encounter a stumbling block.

Integrity

Strategic leaders operate from a place of integrity at all times. This means they don’t cut corners, and they don’t undermine their colleagues. Instead, they collaborate with others to find the best solutions based on other people’s perspectives and input. They don’t need to be the smartest person in the room, and they encourage others to speak up and develop new solutions.

Organizations need strategic leaders who can see beyond the status quo to solve problems and create new opportunities. By developing these five skills, anyone can become a strategic leader.
